I defy you to walk past Pasticceria Rocco in Greenwich Village and not go in. They have the most enticing window display. My friend Ben and I were on our way to Magnolia Bakery when the sight of delectable pastries galore derailed our plans. Honestly, my chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookie was a bit hard for my taste. It's always unsettling when the taste of such a treat does not live up to its mouthwatering appearance. However, one bite of Ben's chocolate chip cannoli made it all worthwhile- wow! There is an overwhelming selection of delicacies from which to choose. When in doubt- the cannoli is a sure thing.
The Godfather has its 40th anniversary this year. Apparently the classic line "Leave the gun; take the cannoli" was improvised by actor Richard Castellano who plays Peter Clemenza. It's surely one of the most brilliant ad-libs in film history:
Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, 1972
"I go to bakeries all day long/ There's a lack of sweetness in my life/ And there is pain inside/ You can see it in my eyes" --The Modern Lovers, Hospital
